So I was working on the punching the other day and I decided to “go hard.” Doing combos, moving around, using energy – that kind of stuff. After a minute or two I was getting winded. I was sweating and though not actually out of breath, it got my heart racing. Then I started thinking about why this was happening. I mean in the ideal scenario, I wouldn’t be breaking sweats or panting like a mofo – I would be able to utilize the same grace throughout.
This got me thinking that what was happening isn’t proper. I know a lot of people do cardio and pump up their heart, do crazy workouts, run for a bit, spar a lot and such things occur. But for us, us who focus on the spine and rising and chi – this is too much. It shouldn’t be happening. We should be “better rested after a fight than before one.” Our relaxation should go to that extent. While this may not be occurring presently, it is an ideal that should be achieved. I know that I don’t want to be the guy that is panting like crazy in a stressed situation. I don’t want to be adrenaline pumped and fully psyched out. I want to chill out. Relax and be in that mindset forever.
So there is this idea that we must work up to and it must be diligently pursued. All of this sweating and panting should not happen. This is what I really believe in. Even in sparring, even in fighting. If we are doing such things, we have not achieved a high level. We should.
